Kerala teen who tested positive for Nipah dies in Kozhikode hospital

Health Minister Veena George informed the media that four additional people have acquired Nipah symptoms, one of whom is on life support. 

A 14-year-old kid from Kerala’s Malappuram district died on Sunday at the government medical college hospital in Kozhikode after testing positive for the Nipah virus.

He got a fever ten days ago and has been on ventilator support since Friday, according to Health Department authorities.

On Saturday, NIV-Pune verified that the youngster had the Nipah virus and sent him from a private hospital to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode.

Monoclonal antibody doses for his therapy were scheduled to arrive in Kozhikode on Sunday from Pune, but he died before then. His remains will be buried according to the Nipah virus procedure.

The Health Department has created a control room in Malappuram, and an alarm has been issued. People were urged to wear masks, and a lockdown was imposed in certain portions of Pandikkad panchayat, the hamlet where the youngster comes from.

Kerala has seen five Nipah outbreaks since 2018. Only six positive patients have survived so far: one in Kozhikode in 2018, another in Kochi in 2019, and four in Kozhikode in 2023. In 2018, 17 of the 18 sick people died, while just one died in 2021. In 2023, there were two Nipah fatalities reported.
