According to AppleInsider, which claims to have confirmed this information with individuals familiar with the program, Apple’s generative AI will be able to summarize lengthy texts. According to the article, the AI can recognize “all available relevant information,” which includes firms, persons, and locations referenced in the text.
“For instance, if a name appears at the top of a text, the software will likely recognize the name as belonging to the text’s author,” according to the paper. According to the website, the summary tool can take information from Safari and Messages, but it may also work with other text fields or digital documents.
Earlier this year, 9to5Mac discovered evidence of a new framework named “SiriSummarization” in the iOS 17.4 source. Another leaker had previously hinted at a new “Safari Browsing Assistant” feature in iOS 18, which would likely highlight the most significant items on a webpage.
Apple has been creating its own language model to run totally offline, but it is also in talks with OpenAI and Google to license their technology for iOS 18. According to AppleInsider sources, the summary functionality for Safari and Messages will work totally offline utilizing Apple’s Ajax language architecture.
Running a language model totally offline ensures faster replies and more privacy, as everything takes place on the device and no data is sent to third-party servers.
