Floods in Afghanistan: The country’s central province saw catastrophic flooding and heavy rainfall, resulting in the deaths of around fifty people.
At least fifty people were murdered in Afghanistan’s Ghor province on Saturday due to heavy rainfall and severe floods, according to Reuters, which cited an official. Mawlawi Abdul Hai Zaem, the chief of the information department for the central Ghor province, stated that while the death toll from the heavy rains is startling, there is no information available on the number of people wounded as a result of the flooding and heavy rainstorm.
In addition to destroying roads, the severe weather has cut off access to isolated locations.
The number of deaths in Afghanistan surpasses 350.
The severe weather that we are presently experiencing is one of the worst that the nation has ever experienced. According to CNN, the World Food Programme said on May 12 that the number of fatalities from floods in Afghanistan has surpassed 300. With the latest loss of almost fifty lives in the Ghor region of Afghanistan, the death toll is probably going to surpass 350.
The Afghan provinces of Badakhshan, Ghor, Baghlan, and Herat have suffered greatly as a result of intense rains and catastrophic flooding. Nearly 2,000 homes have been destroyed by water, and the provinces have seen extensive devastation.
The World Food Program (WFP) stated in a post on X that “flash floods ravage Afghanistan, killing more than 300 people in Baghlan and destroying more than 1000 houses.”
“The abnormally high rainfall over the past two weeks has resulted in numerous floods, including this one. WFP is currently giving the survivors enriched biscuits,” it continued. Around 100 people have been injured, and at least 130 people have perished as a result of the devastating floods that occurred in four districts of Baghlan. Furthermore, provincial authorities in Baghlan said that the death toll may go up much higher.
flood-related loss of life and property
More than a thousand residential dwellings, thousands of hectares of agricultural land, and hundreds of heads of cattle have also been lost as a result of the extreme floods in Afghanistan, according to ANI, which cited CNN.
The interim administration and both local and foreign organizations are being urged to handle the issues and rescue people who are stuck by individuals who lost relatives in the floods.
As it organizes its emergency response to the floods impacting seven provinces, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) reports that hundreds of thousands of people have been left stranded without access to services.
