Disney has decided that it is time to deliver its biggest movie of the year to Disney Plus, and has announced when Deadpool and Wolverine will be available on the platform.
It’s coming soon, so don’t spend too much money on a rental right now. The Deadpool and Wolverine Disney Plus release date is November 12, three and a half months after its theatrical launch. To be honest, the turnaround time isn’t that horrible.
Despite being the sole MCU film released in 2024, and while it is more of an undead FOX film, Deadpool and Wolverine scored extremely well at the box office, establishing an all-time record for an R-rated film.
It is really the 20th most grossing movie of all time, with $1.33 billion worldwide, and it is also the sixth highest-earning MCU film, which is an extraordinarily astounding achievement. Here’s a list.
- Avengers: Endgame grossed $2.79 billion.
- Avengers: Infinity War: $2.05 billion.
- Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.95 billion)
- The Avengers: $1.52 billion
- Avengers: Age of Ultron: $1.4 billion.
- Black Panther: $1.34 billion.
- Deadpool and Wolverine: $1.33 billion
- Iron Man 3: $1.26 billion.
- Captain America: Civil War costs $1.15 billion.
- Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed $1.132 billion.
- Captain Marvel: $1.131 billion
That’s an intriguing list. It’s no surprise that all three Avengers films are included, as well as Civil War, which served as a mini-Avengers film in and of itself. No Way Home went extremely well due to the promise of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire reprising their roles as Spider-Men, which was not exactly a secret.
Black Panther is by far the most successful debut solo feature. Captain Marvel earned $1.13 billion despite its lackluster performance. And it is a tragedy the much better. The Marvels was a flop, making only a tenth of that, $206 million. That seems absurd to me, but it was just the wrong movie released at the wrong moment.
In the next years, the MCU will have Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and the all-important Fantastic Four, with Deadpool and Wolverine flying alone in 2024. Will any of these make a billion? My assumption is that the Fantastic Four will, but I doubt the others will.
Maybe I’m wrong, and that’s not to say that other films won’t be terrific, but a non-Steve Rogers Cap movie is a tough sell at the start, and although the Thunderbolts trailer is fantastic, it’s still a movie mostly featuring B and C list antiheroes/villains. We will see. For now, prepare to re-watch Deadpool and Wolverine in two weeks here.
