The Edge 50 series won’t debut in the U.S., but Motorola is clearly focusing on fine-tuning its mojo.
Motorola has unveiled its new Edge 50 flagship series. The series includes three new models ranging from luxury to mid-range, available in a variety of finishes, including vegan leather (plastic) and wood. And, like the rest of the Android family, Motorola is betting on AI-infused software features to entice customers.
The Edge 50 Ultra is the most loaded of the three smartphones. It includes a 6.7-inch pOLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 CPU (the successor to the standard 8 Gen 3, which powers competing flagships), and 16GB of RAM, which is normal for an Android smartphone claiming to be a computational powerhouse. The Edge 50 Ultra also features a 4,500 mAh battery and unique 125W TurboPower charging.
Motorola believes that you will give it another opportunity with its rear-facing camera system. It consists of three cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera. AI-enhanced features in the camera app, like a new picture enhancement engine that can fine-tune your photographs after you take them and a long exposure option for snapping “moving” photos of waterfalls and lights at night, might increase its potential.
I read that last year’s Edge release finally fulfilled the company’s camera promises, but I’ll believe it when I see it for myself. The camera performance of the Edge+ from two years ago, as well as last year’s ThinkPhone, left me skeptical about Motorola’s ability to compete with Samsung and Google’s products.
The Edge 50 Ultra comes in a variety of finishes, including vegan leather in Forest Grey and Peach Fuzz. There’s also the aforementioned Nordic Wood, which doesn’t appear like wood in the marketing materials. The concept dates back to when Android firms like LG, which is no longer in the smartphone market, experimented with leather backs on the LG G4 to provide a luxury feel. It will be interesting to observe how it matures over time.
The Edge 50 line also includes the Edge 50 Pro and the Edge 50 Fusion. The Edge 50 Pro has a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 mobile CPU and 12GB of RAM. It also features three cameras and is available in a variety of vegan leather finishes, as well as a polymer variant dubbed Moonlight Pearl.
The Edge 50 Fusion is a somewhat reduced version of the Edge 50 Pro. It includes a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 CPU and up to 12GB of RAM, with an 8GB version available because the Fusion is expected to be the most affordable of the lot. Its rear camera system consists of two cameras, and it is available with a hot pink vegan suede backing.
The Motorola Edge 50 series starts at €700 and has no US release date. The gadgets will be released in Europe first, followed by Latin America, Asia, and Oceania, which includes Australia and New Zealand. Motorola is expected to have additional plans for its US users later this year, with no word yet on whether that would include a hardwood or vegan leather rear.
