The 2024 Indian Premier competition (also known as IPL 17 and marketed as TATA IPL 2024) is the 17th season of the Indian Premier League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket competition in India organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.The tournament will take place from March 22 to May 26, 2024, with 10 teams competing.
The reigning champions are the Chennai Super Kings, who won their fifth title the previous season by defeating the Gujarat Titans, making them the tournament’s joint-most successful franchise in history with the Mumbai Indians.
IPL 2024 Hosting
On February 14, 2024, Arun Singh Dhumal, chairman of the Indian Premier League, revealed that the competition will be held in India.
Before establishing the timetable, the league will consult with the Indian government and other organizations. Dhumal further stated that the distribution of matches to states will be determined by the Election Commission of India’s announcement of the Lok Sabha Election Schedule for 2024.
“BCCI intends to start IPL 2024 on March 22. The IPL 2024 schedule will be revealed in two halves. Arun Dhumal informed ANI that the timetable for the first half will be revealed first, followed by the schedule for the second half when the general election dates are published.
IPL 2024 Format:
The teams are split into two groups (A and B) of five each. Each team will play once against all five teams in the opposing group (home and away) and twice against all four teams in its own group. Each squad plays seven home games and seven away games. After the group stage, the top four clubs based on aggregate points advanced to the playoffs.
The top two teams participate in a “Qualifier 1” match, while the remaining two teams fight in an “Eliminator” match.
While the winner of Qualifier 1 qualified straight for the final match, the losing team was given another chance to qualify by facing the winner of the eliminator match in Qualifier 2. The victor of the ensuing Qualifier 2 match advanced to the final match. The team that won the last match was declared the Indian Premier League champions.
IPL 2024: New Rules

IPL 2024 Schedule:
The schedule for this season was released on February 22, 2024, at 5 p.m. Due to the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has stated that the schedule for this season would be revealed in various parts. The initial announcement contains the first 17-day schedule, which consists of 21 matches.
The tournament’s inaugural match was contested on March 22, 2024, at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium between the reigning champions Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The second phase was revealed on March 25, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., and the remaining fixtures were announced. The last group encounter between the Rajasthan Royals and the Kolkata Knight Riders will take place on May 19, 2024, at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati. Qualifier 1 and Eliminator will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 21 and 22.
Qualifier 2 will be contested in Chennai. The final will be held on May 26, 2024, in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, which has hosted the IPL final twice before, in 2011 and 2012.
IPL 2024 Title Sponsorship Rights
The Tata Group extended their deal as the title sponsors of the Indian Premier League for 5 years (2024–28) for ₹2,500 crore (US$310 million), the biggest sponsorship sum in the league’s history. The TATA Group formerly had title sponsorship rights for the IPL between 2022 and 2023.
